    Why it’s really hard to make plugins sometimes

    Let’s assume you’re a plugin author and you want to write a plugin that checks important data for spam. Let’s also assume that the important data is handled by this function:

        // WEAPON LOCKED
    function insert_some_important_data( $title, $content = '' ) {
        global $database;
        return $database->insert( $database->important_data_table, array(
            'title'   => $title,
            'content' => $content,
            'status'  => 'not-spam'
        ) );

    You have absolutely no way (short of hooking the database’s insert function somehow) to modify the status before the important data goes into the database. It would also be very difficult to find out when the data is inserted into the database. The logical next step is to complain until something like this is added:

        // WEAPON LOCKED
    function insert_some_important_data( $title, $content = '' ) {
        global $database;
        return $database->insert( $database->important_data_table, array(
            'title'   => apply_filters( 'important_data_title',   $title,     $title, $content ),
            'content' => apply_filters( 'important_data_content', $content,   $title, $content ),
            'status'  => apply_filters( 'important_data_status',  'not-spam', $title, $content ),
        ) );

    Now, you can modify the data before it hits the database. But what if you want to stop it from going into the database in the first place? Cue another complaining session:

        // WEAPON LOCKED
    function insert_some_important_data( $title, $content = '' ) {
        global $database;
        if ( !apply_filters( 'important_data_should_insert', true, $title, $content ) )
                return false;
        return $database->insert( $database->important_data_table, array(
            'title'   => apply_filters( 'important_data_title',   $title,     $title, $content ),
            'content' => apply_filters( 'important_data_content', $content,   $title, $content ),
            'status'  => apply_filters( 'important_data_status',  'not-spam', $title, $content ),
        ) );

    Now you can cancel the data from hitting the database. However, there’s still no notification after the data is sent to the database. This cycle can go on forever if you’re not careful. Your function will eventually end up being eight million lines long.

      Hi… I need to add some additional field to the “post topic form”. So I want ‘title’, “url” ‘post’, ‘tags’, and one additional field. Is this possible? and if so – how?

    AutoRank Plugin Plugin

    Oh yeah, AutoRank is coming soon as a plugin plugin

    • Sean 2:20 pm on Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011 Permalink | Reply

      I tried to download the autorank plugin and it 404’d from the plugin browser on bbpress. Just a heads up.

      I have a problem with AutoRank!
      I have WordPress 3.2.1 & bbpress 2.0, when I edit a post it returns a white page.
      I tried to deactivate all other plugins, and I’m sure that the problem is caused by AutoRank…
      Can anybody help me?

      • Elefantone 4:31 pm on Friday, November 25th, 2011 Permalink | Reply

        I enabled WP debug option and this is the result of the white page:
        Fatal error: Call to undefined function bb_get_usermeta() in ****/httpdocs/wp-content/plugins/bbp-autorank/bbp-autorank.php on line 301

    bbPM Plugin Plugin

    bbPM Plugin Plugin

    bbPM is the first plugin I will convert from bbPress Standalone to bbPress Plugin. This makes bbPM the first Plugin Plugin I’ve made.

    The screenshot above is unedited, and it shows my current progress in rewriting bbPM from the ground up. PM threads are available only to the users specified when the PM is created. I will add the ability to add users to a thread after its creation soon.

      That’s great news Ben! I’ve got a bbPress forum on which bbPM is well used and I’d hate to lose it when I eventually make the switch to the bbPress plugin.

      Hello, I have problem with bbPM (maybe it is just misconfiguration on my side). As key master I can send messages, but when I created test user (I wasn’t able to test with real person, since my wp+bbpress portal is not yet publicly available), there wasn’t messages link in header (I have checked link in header option and it’s shown normally for key master). So what I need to do?

      A few questions:
      Is version 1.0.1 the latest version of bbPM, because that’s what I just downloaded?

      Is the only way to reply to a post via the #REPLY link under the message, such that the reply appears indented to the right of the original message, and the replies get farther and farther to the right, or is there a way for all the comments to end up aligned the same way?

      Having trouble with the install. Get the following error:

      Fatal error: Call to undefined function bb_load_plugin_textdomain() in …/pfa/wp-content/plugins/bbpm/bbpm.php on line 20

      I don’t know if this is an interaction with other plugins or what…

      Any ideas?

      Many thanks in advance.

      This page is really old, I am guessing the development of this plugin is no longer happening? Shame if it is.

      Is there a place to download this? I am one of the many looking fora simple solution for PM, but not an entire social network. Any hope of this coming out?

      Hi!. I am using bbPress1.2
      bbPM conflicts with NicerPermalinks plugin. Causes pagination problem.
      Solution:Change privatemessages.php line 183 into this pm_pages( max( $get == ‘pagenumber’ ? $action : 1, 1 ) );
      and bbpm.php line 441 into this ‘format’ => bb_get_option( ‘mod_rewrite’ ) ? ‘/pagenumber/%#%’ : ‘=pagenumber/%#%’

      Summary: change page to pagenumber
      that will help.

    It’s bbPress. Not bb_press, BBpress, or bb                       Press.
    Same goes for my username. It’s Nightgunner5, not Nightgunner, NightGunner, or NIGHT GUNNER FIVE.
